Mental Health Awareness Week 2025: Celebrating the Power of Community
Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 runs from 12–18 May, with this year's theme "Community" highlighting the vital role our connections play in supporting mental wellbeing. Led by the Mental Health Foundation since 2001, this national event invites us to reflect on how belonging, support, and shared purpose can protect and enhance our mental health.
Why "Community" Matters
Strong social connections are proven to reduce isolation, build resilience, and provide emotional and practical support during life's challenges. Whether it's through neighbours, workplaces, schools, or online networks, communities offer a sense of belonging and purpose that helps us thrive.
Yet, stigma and barriers still prevent many from seeking help. A recent survey found that one in three Brits avoid mental health support due to fears of appearing "weak," especially among younger generations. This highlights the importance of fostering compassionate, inclusive communities where people feel safe to speak up and seek support.
How You Can Get Involved
Here are some meaningful ways to participate in Mental Health Awareness Week:
1. Start Conversations - Use the Mental Health Foundation's conversation guides to talk with friends, colleagues, or young people about mental health. These resources help you approach sensitive topics with empathy and confidence.
2. Share Your Story - Join the #ThisIsMyCommunity campaign by posting about what community means to you. The Mental Health Foundation offers downloadable graphics and templates to help spread awareness on social media.
3. Move It for Mental Health - Participate in the "31 Miles in May" challenge by walking, running, cycling, or wheeling to raise awareness and funds for mental health causes.
4. Support in the Workplace - Employers can access free posters, quizzes, and toolkits from Mates in Mind to promote mental wellbeing at work. Creating a supportive workplace culture is essential for employee mental health.
5. Engage with Schools - Teachers and school staff can utilise toolkits from Mentally Healthy Schools to support students' mental health during the week.
